Industrial Hemp and What it Means for North Carolina's Economy

Join us to learn more about the burgeoning hemp industry and the opportunity it brings for positive business impact in North Carolina. We’ll welcome Blake Butler, Executive Director of the North Carolina Industrial Hemp Association, who will share information about hemp as it pertains to farming, retail, and the manufacturing/processing opportunities for hemp in our state. Blake will also discuss labor concerns/issues as the NC economic development community grapples with job creation and maintaining a marketable workforce. During the luncheon we will also discuss several exciting hemp related business and collaborative initiatives that are happening in WNC.

The North Carolina Industrial Hemp Association (NCIHA) represents all the stakeholders helping to build a thriving hemp industry in North Carolina. They support the growing, processing, and sale of hemp and hemp products within North Carolina in a responsible manner. Hemp is currently being grown for a variety of industrial, recreational and medicinal purposes in North Carolina and NCIHA believes that our state can be accelerated to the forefront of global growth in hemp. As one of the fastest growing plants, hemp was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber 10,000 years ago. While the use of hemp has been stifled over the past decade, the resurgence of this highly beneficial crop is here. Hemp can be used for a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, building materials, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, animal feed, medicinal supplements, recreational products and more.

An optional tour of Asheville Botanicals will be offered following the luncheon from 2 - 3 pm for those interested. Asheville Botanicals is a hemp processing facility located about a 1/2 mile from the Biltmore Estate. Tour participants will have the opportunity to see hemp processing in action! Tour participants will convene at Asheville Botanicals following the conclusion of the luncheon at 1:30 pm.

Time

The luncheon will begin at Noon. The registration desk will open at 11:30, so arrive early for some added time to network! The optional Asheville Botanicals tour will be held from 2-3 pm. Tour registrants will depart Biltmore when the luncheon concludes at 1:30 pm and travel to Asheville Botanicals separately. We'll reconvene at Asheville Botanicals at 2 pm for the tour.

The luncheon will be held in Vanderbilt Ballroom A at the Inn on Biltmore.

The registration fee includes your meal, the luncheon program, an outstanding networking opportunity with your fellow economic development colleagues from Western NC and an optional tour of Asheville Botanicals.
